"You know, I left here thinking that Tyrone was Shawn's friend. He was such a comfort to me at Shawn's funeral, only to find out he had him killed. That's a tough pill to swallow." ― Ruth[source]

Ruth Scott is a minor character in All American. She is portrayed by Bernadette Speakes.

Ruth is a resident of Crenshaw who had the pain of losing her two sons Brandon and Shawn in gang wars. She later killed Tyrone Morris, who was responsible for the boys' deaths. She turned herself in instead of letting Coop go to prison.

History[]

In "Homecoming", Ruth first appears at Brandon's apartment when she meets Coop. She's pacing around the house frantically because she doesn't know where Shawn is. She says Shawn told her he had something to deal with and asked her to babysit, but he was supposed to be back over an hour ago. She needs to buy Maya some milk and get to work. She tells Coop to let Shawn know that she is not happy. Later, when Shawn was fatally shot, Coop mentions that she stayed with him until Ruth arrived.

In "Keep Ya Head Up", Ruth is seen at church, where Pastor Weeks says that Shawn should be sitting next to his beautiful mother, but instead, they are saying goodbye to him on Tuesday. She goes to Brandon's apartment to collect Maya's things, with Tyrone's help. Coop offers her Brandon's old video games, but Ruth says Maya isn't playing those. She says Shawn wasted too much time on games and offers them to Tyrone instead. She and Coop hug goodbye. Later, Ruth is seen at Shawn's funeral, with Tyrone comforting her. He tells her that she just has to get through tonight and that he's here if she needs anything. Ruth is trying and she knows he's there for her. Tyrone says that Shawn was a good boy.

In "Who Shot Ya", Ruth returns to town for the Taste of Crenshaw event. She feels it's the right time to come back, as she has been the chief organizer every year since Shawn was born. She says it feels good to pour her energy into something positive, especially for South Crenshaw High. She thought Tyrone was Shawn's friend, so finding out that he had him killed was a hard pill to swallow. She was going to go to the police to talk to them about not letting her son's killer walk free, but it doesn't make her feel any better knowing he's dead. It doesn't bring her boys back.

Later, Coop goes to turn herself in, only to find out that her warrant has been canceled. The person who shot Tyrone has already turned themselves in. Ruth comes out of the interview room and tells Coop that she didn't want her to throw her life away for something she did. She doesn't really remember what happened the day of the shooting, just that she wanted the pain to stop—and that it wouldn't as long as Tyrone was walking around free. She had no idea that Coop was even there until the video surfaced; she didn't think it would blow back on her. She tells Coop that she deserves to be a kid, without the fear of violence, and to live out her wildest dreams. Ruth tells Spencer and Coop to live for Shawn.
