History[]
Season Five[]
In "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down", Rick meets with Billy at GAU and apologizes for the chaos surrounding Garrett's sudden departure. Billy chuckles and tells him that even to this day, Willy won't stop talking about South Crenshaw's finest, Rick Barnes—the running back who took the team to state after that near-decade-long drought. Rick reminds Billy that he came along a few years later and broke all of his records. Rick then asks what he can do for Billy. Billy thanks Rick for taking such good care of his boys this season. He then asks how the Garrett news went down. Rick explains that a friend at the NCAA had heard some rumors about Garrett, so he decided to get ahead of the situation by self-penalizing. He gave Garrett a generous package, and Garrett's going to take a year off from coaching to spend more time with his family. Rick assures Billy that his boys are going to be well taken care of. He tells Billy that he should be proud of himself, as Spencer and Jordan are pillars of the program with very bright futures ahead. He also mentions that he understands Olivia is pursuing a story on Garrett but assumes that it'll go away now that Garrett's resigned and the NCAA's involved. Rick concludes by saying it was good seeing Billy and that he can shoot him a text if he needs anything.
Later, Rick calls Billy and confronts him about the rumors. Olivia is still releasing the article, but Rick thought they had an understanding. He's trying to save the program and Billy's boys' futures. Rick says Billy knows what's at stake. It's not about their pasts at South Crenshaw; it's about the culture. He's asking for a lifeline, as one Black man to another.
