Season Four[]
In "All I Need", Nurse Joy asks if Olivia is worried about Spencer leaving. She knows Olivia is excited for him, but the last time Olivia felt like everyone was moving on without her, she relapsed. Joy reminds her that she can be both excited for him and concerned about her sobriety. She congratulates Olivia when she says that she feels different and stronger. Joy then asks what's really on her mind, and Olivia asks if she's in a relationship. Joy tells her that she and Ayanna have been together for five years. Olivia says she wants to wait until she's 90 days sober to sleep with Spencer, but Joy reminds her that people in recovery often put numbers on everything, which isn't always helpful. Olivia admits she's freaking out, but Joy explains that she's freaking out because it's special. What Olivia and Spencer have is real, important, and it's love. Joy felt the same way with Ayanna. She tells Olivia that she'll know when the timing is right and that no one else will know but her. Joy asks if Spencer is pressuring her. Olivia assures her that he's not but wonders why. Joy lets Olivia handle the drama on her own and leaves before she gets a migraine.
In "Can It All Be So Simple", Nurse Joy watches as Olivia talks with Sara before the NA meeting. She tells Olivia that she's having a little proud mama-bear moment, but she's not crying. She notes that watching Olivia with Sara was beautiful. Joy wants Olivia to share her story since they have a couple of new members attending. Olivia doesn't want to take away someone else's time, but Joy reassures her that she won't, and people clearly love what she has to say.
Joy watches as Jenn storms out while Olivia shares her story. After the meeting, Joy tells Olivia that Jenn is 15, full of hormones, and acting out because her parents had a court order. She explains that Jenn doesn't always leave like that, but something Olivia said clearly triggered her. Joy tells Olivia that Jenn needs someone like her, who is closer in age and attitude. She then says it's time for Olivia to step up, as her story clearly has an impact and she has a servant's heart. Olivia thinks she's too inexperienced to sponsor, but Joy urges her to give back. Olivia argues that she can't handle someone like Jenn, but Joy believes Jenn is just a mini-her. She understands if Olivia's not ready but asks her to keep an open mind when she is.
Season Five[]
In "Day Ones", Nurse Joy shows up to support Olivia after Billy's death. Olivia is trying not to relapse, but she asks what's really going on. She understands that Olivia losing her dad hurts, but she doesn't think that's the whole story. Joy reminds her that she has been where Olivia is. She commends Olivia for doing the right thing by activating her village instead of trying to deal with it alone. She notes that it's growth, but Olivia's village can't babysit her forever. Joy tells her to dig deep and find her "why", Why, now, does she want that drink? She urges Olivia to take the leap and find those answers while she has her entire village surrounding her, ready to catch her if needed.
