! This article is about the Beverly coach. For the Coastal California coach and her husband, see Coach Montes.

"Beverly is my next step. I mean, look at what we get to do. I love this. And these kids need us, they look up to us, and they still love football. You know, some people assume that I haven't applied to a D1 job because I'm a woman, but, really, it's because... I'm right where I belong. Doesn't get any better than this." ― Elena[source]

Coach Elena Montes is the head coach for the Beverly Eagles after Billy Baker's departure. She is portrayed by Alexandra Barreto.

Her husband was the head coach of the Coastal California Manta Rays before moving on to the NFL. By "Reborn", she had left Beverly and her job was taken over by Cassius Jeremy.

In "Survival of the Fittest", Montes appears in the flashbacks, coaching Beverly in the state championship game against Crenshaw. On the final play, the Chargers attempt a comeback, but fall short, and Beverly becomes state champions once again.

In "I Ain't Goin' Out Like That", Asher meets Montes at her office. She asks how he's holding up, and he says he's not fine, but it is what it is. She reminds him that they wouldn't have won the championship game without his plays. Asher deserves his ring, and she needs him to know that. Montes wants him to see one more doctor. She tells him that her husband knows a cardiologist who works with the Rams, and he's willing to see Asher today. Asher tells her he spent weeks seeing doctors all over the country, and they all said the same thing. He doubts this doctor will tell him anything different, but Montes says Dr. Rohan is one of the leading heart specialists in the country, and he focuses on athletes. He's still unsure, but she wouldn't have set it up if she didn't think he had a chance.

Later, Gwen storms into Montes's office, claiming that she had no right to interfere in her family's business. Montes deduces that she's Asher's mom. Gwen tells her that Asher had finally gotten to a good place, but now they're right back where they started, waiting for yet another round of tests. She claims that all Montes has done is give him false hope. Montes argues that Asher should explore every option before giving up something he loves. She doesn't think it would hurt to hear what Dr. Rohan has to say, but Gwen insists that it would. The outcomes are all bad: either Asher's dreams get crushed again, or she'll have to worry about him having a heart attack every time he steps on the field. Montes argues that she's just trying to give Asher all the information he needs to make the best decision for himself. Gwen thinks Montes is doing this to get her son back on the team. She argues that Montes doesn't get to put her son's life in danger just to live out her own failed football dreams. Montes counters that Gwen doesn't get to kill her son's dreams just for a second chance to play mom again. Gwen tells her that she's not Asher's coach anymore, so his days of listening to her are over. She tells Montes to stay out of his life.

In "All I Need", Montes tells Asher that she's sorry Coastal California officially rescinded his scholarship, but it's good to know they will still honor his acceptance to the university. Asher isn't surprised, since he can't play due to his heart condition. She knows he was hoping for a full scholarship, but reminds him that there are other options. Asher appreciates her help but tells her that Coastal doesn't really feel like the right fit anymore without football. Montes asks about his plan B, but Asher is still working on it. He gets up to leave, assuming she's working on the plays for the next season, but she explains that it's for the Platinum All-American Game. Montes will be coaching the Western Conference team. She offers to let him help on the sidelines, as Jordan and Spencer would love to have him there, and she would appreciate his insight. Asher appreciates the offer but declines, saying that being so close to football hurts a little too much.

Later, Montes meets with Jordan, who wants more playing time. She can't make any promises, but Jordan would be happy with just a series. She tells him she will do her best to get him on the field in the second half. Jordan apologizes, saying he didn't mean to pressure her into giving him more playing time. Montes isn't sure there's anything Jordan can do on the field to bring in the offers he wants. He doesn't know what more to do, and she urges him to sit down. She tells him it's not his talent that's keeping the offers away, but his medical history. He argues that concussions aren't uncommon, but Montes reminds him that he's had two in the same season, and the second one landed him in the hospital. She tells Jordan that the D1 coaches she's spoken to said they can't risk a roster spot on a player they feel won't last a full year.

In "Bird in the Hand", Montes is one of the coaches for the Western team in the Platinum All-American Game. She puts Jordan in the game, and he requests that she put Isaiah in as well. Reluctantly, she tells Isaiah to get a helmet.

Season Five[]

In "Time", Asher runs into Montes and she greets him as her husband's ace recruiter. Asher was her secret weapon, and now he's his. He notes that Beverly just had another great season without him, but Montes tells him it was easier with him by her side. Asher asks about her secret to coaching, to which she replies, "hydration". Billy joins the conversation, noting that it's a Beverly reunion. He asks how his old office is doing, and Montes says she keeps adding banners to it. Asher tells both Billy and Montes that they mean a lot to him and helped him become the person he is today. He walks away, knowing Montes hates these moments.

Montes has heard the rumors about Billy coaching at Golden Angeles University next year, where he and Asher will be rivals. He asks her if she ever thinks about what her next step will be. Montes replies that Beverly is her next step. She loves what they get to do. The kids need them, look up to them, and still love football. She notes that some people assume she hasn't applied for a D1 job because she's a woman, but it's because she's right where she belongs. She doesn't think it will get better than this. Montes is sure Billy has his reasons for moving on, but she would be crazy to leave.

Season Six[]

In "Mass Appeal", Montes asks Asher to meet her at her husband's now-empty office. She tells him that he left when the party ended but left a necklace for her to give to Asher. She explains that he hasn't taken the move lightly and has lost a lot of sleep worrying about the staff he's leaving behind, but he doesn't worry about Asher. She tells him that her husband is sure Asher will one day have more championship rings than fingers, so the chain is for the extras. When Coach Montes calls, Asher hesitates to pick up. She asks if he's going to answer, but Asher doesn't know how to say goodbye. She tells him that now's his chance.
